You may be aware that the Goodwood Revival wrapped up this weekend and was a superb outlet to vicariously fulfill your vintage race car fantasies. But don’t forget that two wheels are also good so be amazed at Troy Corser‘s skills as he flogs a pre-war BMW around the Goodwood circuit.
Despite the poor weather, a few laps were to be had by a handful of nutjobs who were willing to take these old motorbikes to their limit. Corser does the old girl a favor and gave her the best laps of her life until she give up the ghost.
Corser seems to give zero fucks as he whips his ride through the hairpin, clips the apex using every bit of the track nearly cutting the grass while dragging his knee.
Battling a series of tank slappers he fights for control of the bike and takes the fastest lap of the day by a margin of .5 seconds. That is, until the 1935 BMW decides to stop running. A lap time of 1:37.369 put Corser on the pole with some unbelievable riding on an 80 motorcycle.
As the weekend progressed, the weather deteriorated but that didn’t change Corser’s riding style. He continued to push another running vintage BMW right to the limits. Watch below to see a massive puddle end the race for Corser in a spectacular wipeout.

I don’t care much for motorcycle racing, but that was really neat to watch.

I like how the cylinder almost drags on the pavement around corners.

What BMW is that? R12 or R17?

In no way, shape, or form is a Grom more fun than riding old race bikes. That’s like saying, “don’t buy that old Abarth/MG/Lotus, buy a Versa instead, it’s more fun.”
No. No it’s not.

a grom isnt a versa.
grom is more miata.
okay, maybe its 80% of the fun. but it will actually run every single time.

You haven’t lived until you’ve frantically kick started a vintage motorcycle in the middle of an intersection while making a left in traffic.
The Grom isn’t a Miata. The Yamaha SR400, Kawasaki W800, and the modern Triumph Bonneville are Miatas.

I’ve done it.
thank you very much, I’ll pass. I like riding my bikes. Not wondering why they dont work.
those arent the miata of bikes. if anything, the Sv would be the miata.
those are retro wanna bes. Base mustangs and camaros and junk like that. not that good in the corners, not that fast in a straight line, really only good for looking good.

not that good in the corners, not that fast in a straight line
So...the Miata of bikes. As shitty as they are, a base Mustang and a base Camaro will blow the doors off a base Miata in a straight line. They make about twice the power. In stock form they’re all shitty in the corners. But yeah, if it takes a while to figure out why air cooled Japanese bikes aren’t running, vintage bikes/cars definitely aren’t for you. Compared to my old GMC, the vintage Honda bikes I’ve owned are a breeze.
My only form of transportation while in college was a 2003 SV650. It was a salvage title that I turned into a street fighter-esque bike. Bobbed the subframe, Renthal bars, put a larger rear sprocket on. That was a really fun bike, but definitely not a throwback like a Miata. Fuel injection and radiators don’t give you that same feeling. It left me stranded a few times. That front cylinder does not like riding through Arizona monsoons. I started carrying a can of compressed air with me during monsoon season so I could blow water out of the front spark plug hole. It also ate a fuel pump which ended up costing as much as some bikes I’ve owned. You know you’ve found your soulmate when you’re girlfriend (who hates motorcycles) will come help you lift a heavy bike into the back of her pickup in 110F weather. I miss that bike. Put around 80,000 miles on her.

didnt do the GSX-R suspension did you?
like the miata, chaneg the suspension and harden up the frame a touch,....best handling bike you can get.
never cleaned the drain plug either did you?

I left the forks stock. I was working full time and going to school on a scholarship, so I had to have fun on the cheap (hence the salvage titled SV that I used as a DD). Drain plug was clear. There’s only so much water that front plug can drain through it. These weren’t spring time showers I was riding through, but flash flood causing severe thunderstorms.
Pretty much every car/motorcycle/truck will handle better if you put better suspension on it and harden up the frame. That’s not a quality unique to Miatas.

That. Was. DOPE.
